North Korea has strict regulations on clothing, and jeans are considered a symbol of Western influence, which the regime views with suspicion. As a result, wearing jeans, especially blue denim, is often prohibited or heavily discouraged in many parts of the country. However, there have been reports of jeans being worn discreetly in some areas, particularly black or dark-colored jeans, which are less conspicuous.
An example of the enforcement of such a diktat:
North Korea’s state broadcaster, KCTV, blurred out a pair of jeans worn by veteran British TV host Alan Titchmarsh as part of the country’s censorship of foreign fashion and culture on a show, “Garden Secrets”.
The other fashion bans in North Korea include bans on short skirts, logo clothing, high heels, and brightly coloured or flashy attire.
