"Breaking the seal": a myth or reality

Updated: Jul 6

We may believe that the increased urine frequency after drinking alcohol is just because of the fluid intake. But that’s not the reason.

An experiment done a few years ago where subjects were given the same quantities of alcohol and plain water, confirmed that those who drank the alcohol urinate more.

It is now confirmed that alcohol inhibits the release of the ADH (Antidiuretic hormone) thereby causing a transient Central DI (Diabetes insipidus) and thus increased urine production. The principal physiologic effect of ADH is the retention of water by the kidney by stimulating reabsorption of water.

Based on the above effect, there is evidence that a patient suffering from SIADH (excess of ADH) and another patient suffering from heart failure were treated with alcohol. But these cannot be standard recommendations for treatment since alcohol is toxic to the body.

To blunt the diuretic effect of alcohol, an extra amount of salt may be added to the salad or food. Or the water intake may be reduced. But both these have an increased risk of causing dehydration and may give a hangover effect the next day.

Break the seal: It's a slang expression that means - To urinate for the first time when consuming large amounts of alcohol, from which point one feels the need to urinate very frequently thereafter.

I daresay, this is just a myth and no matter how much you hold the urine, the amount of alcohol that has entered the system has to exit as well.

While beer due to its higher liquid content might seem to be the main culprit amongst the alcohols to increase the urination, switching to other liquors wont put you in the clear. Since alcohol itself has a diuretic effect, higher proof beverages may actually boost your urine production even further.

So, the only way to reduce the urination after alcohol is to restrict the intake of alcohol.
